| Inquiry (sent on October 1, 2010) | Cycling Issues in Edmonton Schools Questionnaire |

| Response | Dear Chris, 1. I have been an avid cycler, cycling to school since grade 7, then to University, and until today, often to work and to the pool for my daily 2 kilometre swim. 2. I try and stay off the busy roads, and am fortunate to be able to ride through the University farm, then parallel to the LRT to University, and across the High Level bridge downtown. My own children cycled to school from elementary right through high school, and one cycled to University today. I believe more bicycle lanes on city streets would encourage much more cycling.
… (show more)3. I would begin a discussion about this with administration, to see what concrete initiatives (possibly towards credit courses) might be instituted. 4. We already have a pilot project called “apple schools” which I would look towards implementing and expanding to include a cycling initiative. 5. I attach my brochure which addresses many of your questions on school closures, and even mentions my cycling. 6. I know the schools my children attended did, and in fact have the bicycle parking area under closed circuit surveillance. 7. It could become a necessary aspect of our physical education program, as could swimming, an activity that I similarly practice and endorse. 8. It is often a question of scheduling. I think the better approach would be a positive one encouraging cycling wherever it is practical and possible for all families. 9. I attach a photo here of my Jasper to Banff bicycle trip two summers ago.
Thank you for the opportunity to chat about an activity that I and my children have been passionate about our whole lives. I certainly will encourage cycling at the school level.Michael |
