| Response | 1. I don’t have a bike. I walk from time to time (more during the election campaign!) 2. I suspect that students feel more comfortable riding with traffic than their parents do. For all riders to feel more comfortable, there needs to be at least a couple of changes in attitude, and maybe in bylaws: children, at least, should be allowed to ride on sidewalks; their parents should set an example of appropriate bike-riding behaviour; perhaps more publicity about safe bike-riding programs, possibly incorporated into Phys.Ed. programs especially at the upper elementary levels.
… (show more)3. Please see that last point in question 2. 4 & 5. Provincial initiatives regarding activity have helped. School staffs are more conscious of the benefit of natural (play) activity, and are increasingly likely to build it into the school day. Students in newer areas also travel long distances to their “neighbourhood” schools, which are meant to accommodate much larger areas than in the past. The road is jammed in the mornings for delivery of children, and in the afternoon for pickup – and distances contribute to this fact of life. It’s not just school closures that increase the distance between home and school; it’s also practices related to provision of new schools. Of course schools should be accessible for community use. For this to happen, there needs to be some revision of existing agreements so that the cost of such use does not fall directly on the schools themselves, which is the case at present. 6. Most schools do provide for bicycle storage. 7 & 8. Community league bike safety; parent education/discussion. |
