1. I am an occasional bicycle rider for exercise and leisure.

2. I feel comfortable riding in traffic, although like most cyclists, I prefer riding on bike lanes.

a) I imagine every child has a different level of comfort riding their bicycle to school, depending on their age, riding skill, and experience.

3. I believe that the closure of eighteen schools in Edmonton over the last ten years has had many damaging effects on our communities. One of those effects is that fewer schools means longer travel distances to schools, which is bound to discourage bicycle use. I will fight further school closures and work to promote community schools where it is easier to walk and bike to class.

I would also support programs designed to promote walking and cycling. Those programs might be as simple as a ‘bike to school week,’ but I would also be interested in learning about ways to including cycling in the physical education curriculum.

4. As noted above, the trend of school closures needs to be reversed. There is much that can be done to promote community schools among parents.

I would also like to see the school board lobby the City of Edmonton to build more bike lanes around schools.

5. I will fight school closures and do everything in my power as a school trustee to prevent further closures from happening. I also strongly support opening our school buildings up to a broad range of community groups, which would include use for physical activities.

6. While I do not have enough information at this time to answer this question, I would be interested in learning more. If there is a need for more (or more secure) bike facilities, I would support providing those facilities.

7. I support programs designed to promote walking and cycling. Those programs might be as simple as a ‘bike to school week,’ but I would also be interested in learning about ways to including cycling in the physical education curriculum.

8. I feel it’s important to promote community schools for a wide variety of reasons. Community schools encourage parents to send their kids to schools that are close to home, which encourages walking and cycling to school. They also create hubs for parents (particularly parents of elementary school aged children) who visit with community members when they drop off/pick up their children.

I have a bike. I ride it about once a week-month in the summer. This summer I hardly used it at all though… not great for canvasing.
