InquiryHello Andrew Lineker,

I am writing for the Edmonton Bicycle Commuters and myself, being a cyclist. I would like you to have cycling on your platform. Commuting by bicycle should be made safer, by painting more bicycle lanes on busy roads.
On main street arteries, bicycle lanes should be separate from autos and pedestrians. These should have their own traffic lights and be cleared in the winter of snow. Once biking is made more safe, more people will use the bicycle for commuting and it will result in cleaner air and healthier people. The infrastructure for this would be inexpensive and affordable. Bicycles should have secure parking areas beside transit and LRT stations.

Are you a cyclist? If so, we would like you to send us a photo of yourself on a bicycle, it would be appreciated.

ResponseDear J:

I thank you for your interest in my website and campaign. And, yes I am definitely a cyclist. However, my bike is currently under repair so I cannot provide you with a picture at this time.

I do agree that we do need a safer means
of transporting by bicycles in this city. Our road system is not currently set up for bike lanes, and to do so would incur extremely expensive road construction changes. Usage of lines on sidewalks or beside sidewalks especially for bikes may provide a better alternative. Most sidewalks except for the downtown and Whyte Ave area are not used by pedestrians a whole lot.

Winter poses many problems for both bikes and vehicles. The city as it stands right now cannot provide snow removal. I have spoken about the pothole shuffle and winter barricades in my website numerous times.

Our extreme climate does pose serious health threats to people. Cyclists expose themselves to freezing of the lungs. People cannot withstand our extreme cold for more than mere minutes. I myself would not even attempt to bike in the winter for fear of this. People who are not prepared could suffer dyer consequences.

One in ten people who cycle on roadways or highways in Canada are either severely hurt or killed by improper bike lanes or pathways.

Should you have further queries or concerns, please feel free to contact me at your convenience.

Best regards,
Andrew Lineker

Despite stating he is a cyclist, I can’t help but wonder how often he bikes if he thinks that cyclists would be better off on sidewalks with painted lines. I don’t see the cost savings he is trying to point out by making bike lanes on roads vs. making bike lanes on sidewalks. Bike lanes are hardly the “extremely expensive” options here!

Is he trying to scare people out of cycling in the winter?! Of course it’s not for everyone, and not for all winter days.

Love that he pulled the 1/10 statistic out of nowhere. “Hurt or killed by improper bike lanes”? What? His bike-lane-on-sidewalk suggestion would cause more confusion and awkward right-of-ways than an on-street bike lane.
