| Response | Good evening Chris, Thank you for taking the time to contact me and I’m happy to respond to the questions. 1. I used to ride my bike regularly when I lived in Spruce Grove as there are many bike paths connecting the city. Since moving to Edmonton 10 years ago, I have only used my bike a few times as I do not feel comfortable riding my bike on the roads.
… (show more)2. I walk at least five days a week to and from work. I started walking two years ago when I moved into my condo and the plan was to save up money so that I could buy a vehicle. As I started walking, I realized there wasn’t a huge time difference between my walk to work and my drive to work. After a few months of walking, I decided that my wife and I could live with just one car. Walking to work is very enjoyable because I get time to listen to podcasts and walk through the Meadowlark and West Meadowlark communities. 3. My wife and I do not feel safe riding my bike with traffic on the road. In order to make cyclists feel more safe, I support the City of Edmonton’s Bicycle Transportation Plan because it will provide cyclists with dedicated bike lanes throughout the city which will increase the safety for everyone. 4. I personally do not celebrate bike month as I walk most everywhere. 5. I support supplying the required 10% of the Transportation Capital Budget towards Active Transportation Projects. As someone who walks almost every day, I believe the city must provide great quality infrastructure for all methods of transportation. 6. I will commit to fully funding the Bicycle Transportation Plan if elected. 7. Planning and Development departments, Transportation department, Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues, Edmonton Police Services, Transit Riders’ Union of Edmonton and of City Council. 8. I believe our city needs to focus their efforts on providing vehicle parking underground when we develop new medium to high density buildings. This will free up much needed space for open walkways and parking for bicycles. We need to provide efficient alternatives to driving in order to shift our thinking. 9. We should educate people about the cost savings they will experience when they use other methods of transit compared to driving. Therefore we should create some marketing programs that will spread the word about the benefits of cycling, walking and using public transit. 10. Since I walk most everywhere I unfortunately do not have a recent picture of me on a bicycle. Thank you again for the questionnaire and if you have any other questions about my platform, please contact me. Sincerely, Andrew Knack |
| Inquiry | I own a house in Valleyview, and see a constant stream of walkers, joggers, and cyclists go by in front of my house every day, year-round. The 10-year Bicycle Transportation Plan lays out 500km of bikeways across the entire city for less than the cost of a single
overpass. Cycling reduces congestion and builds healthier, more engaged, and safer communities. What are your priorities regarding active transportation, specifically providing cycling infrastructure for transportation?
